Dr Katie Rainey is a research scientist in the area of machine learning and artificial intelligence, as well as the director of science and technology for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance at the Naval Information Warfare Center Pacific, a U.S. Navy research laboratory in San Diego, California.
Her primary research interest is in the topic of robust evaluation of machine learning algorithms, to be able to understand when they will work and when they will fail. She works to direct research to support defense applications, and is active in building the community of AI researchers among defense laboratories and partner organizations. She is the founding co-chair of the annual workshop on Naval Applications of Machine Learning, one of the largest technical exchanges on artificial intelligence in the Department of Defense. She has a PhD in mathematics from the University of California, Irvine, and lives in San Diego with her husband and two children.
